Former Manchester United and England captain Bryan Robson is baffled by what has gone wrong this season under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Robson was expecting much more this term.
He told BBC Radio: "Ole has built a good squad, when you look back at last season where we got to the Europa League final, finished second in the league and it's been building and building and we've been getting better as Ole's been in charge.
"What's gone wrong this season is beyond me because I'm thinking it's the same group of players but then we've added Sancho, Ronaldo, Varane.
"So you're thinking the next step is to go forward and challenge City, Chelsea and Liverpool for the title and be comfortable in the Champions League to at least go to maybe the quarter-finals semi-final, final.
"The last few performances have been really disappointing and it's not just the results, it's the way we've played, we look disjointed."
Robson also spoke on goalkeeper David de Gea's comments that the players "don't know what to do with the ball" following the 4-1 loss against Watford.
"It wasn't good for Ole , it wasn't good for the staff and really if that's the case it shouldn't be said immediate, that should be said in the dressing room, I don't know whether it was."
On what the future holds for Manchester United, he added: "It's going to be interesting times ahead again, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher as far as I know are going to take over so it will be interesting to see how they change it and what they do, that just gives the club that bit of time to have a real good plan and see who they are going to bring in next."
And on what Solskjaer means to Manchester United, Robson said: "Ole's loved by the fans of Manchester United, he's really respected around the club because he is a really nice guy, he built the squad up where they were doing pretty well. I think the one thing which the squad with him needed was to win something and that would have maybe given them the confidence to do better than what they've done this year."
