Mark Leyland is "buzzing" after becoming Newcastle's first coaching analyst.

Leyland left Liverpool to take up the newly created role last week.

Good friend David Raven, a former Liverpool player, told ChronicleLive: "Mark said he had conversations with Jurgen and [assistant] Pep [Lijnders] in the office before he left and they were laughing about it.

"Mark was like, 'Come on! What can I do that's going to make that much of a difference?' There's not a lot you can do sometimes!

"But he's excited and buzzing for the next step in his career. When Eddie [Howe] nearly went to Celtic, there was talk of him there and all the rest of it and now he's gone to Newcastle and I think he's going to make a real difference there.

"It will be a long-term thing - I don't think it will be next week or the week after. You're going to see it come to fruition in a few years' time probably after the countless hours he puts in."
