Manchester United manger Ralf Rangnick has said Tom Heaton deserved to make his first-team debut against Young Boys on Wednesday.

Having joined the club for the second time this past summer, Heaton finally made his first-team debut after 19 years.

Rangnick said: "He had his debut at the age of 35, I obviously wasn't aware of that but we had some conversation with the goalkeeping coaches and we decided yesterday, if at all possible if the chronology of the game allowed it, we would want to give him his debut at Old Trafford today.

"He's been playing in England for such a long time at Championship and Premier League level, he even had some game-time for the England team. I wasn't aware of that. Richard told me that.

"He's a fantastic person, a very good goalkeeper who more than deserved his opportunity to debut at the age of 35."
