AC Milan defender Simon Kjaer faces six months out after undergoing knee surgery.

Kjaer underwent arthroscopy in the left knee to fix the cruciate ligament.

He suffered the injury in the opening minutes of the 3-0 win over Genoa on Wednesday and was stretchered off in the first half of the match.

Milan has confirmed the player underwent surgery on Friday and the 32-year-old is expected to be out for six months.

"AC Milan announce that today, Simon Kjaer underwent arthroscopy in the left knee for the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament and the re-insertion of the medial collateral ligament," the club wrote in a statement.

"The operation, carried out at La Madonnina Clinic, was perfectly successful and was performed by Dr. Roberto Pozzoni with the help of the Galeazzi CTS (Centre for Sports Traumatology) team in the presence of the club's health manager, Stefano Mazzoni."
