Man claims trial to syabu trafficking

Kota Kinabalu: A 50-year-old man claimed trial at the High Court here Tuesday for trafficking 149.51gm of syabu.

Poniman Sumardi pleaded not guilty before Judicial Commissioner Amelati Parnell to committing the offence at 9am March 5, this year at Ian Enterprise tyre shop, Beaufort Central, Beaufort.

Poniman was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The charge is punishable under Section 39B (2) of the same Act and carries the death sentence or imprisonment for life and whipping not less than 15 strokes if not sentenced to death, on conviction.

The court set Jan 28 for case management.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Azreen Yas Mohamad Ramli prosecuted while Poniman was not represented.

Poniman was ordered to be remanded further as the charge against him has no provision for bail.

Meanwhile, a 41-year-old man was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with removing stolen property.

Driver Too Vui Hin was accused of removing a stolen vehicle bumper belonging to one Eng Chee Hui at 3.45pm on Dec 9 in bushes at a roadside of Kg Kasigui, Penampang.

Inspector Albert Basiri, prosecuting, applied for another mention date and proposed bail at RM5,000 in two sureties.

Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun fixed Jan 24 for pre-trial case management and released Too on a bail of RM1,200 in two sureties.

The charge under Section 414 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine, or both, on conviction.
