Fined RM100 for unexplained RM24k in bank

Kota Kinabalu: A 49-year-old man from Selangor was fined RM100 or three days’ jail for fraudulently having RM42,000 in his bank account.

Chan Mei Foong pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles, to the charge against him, Wednesday.

He had the money belonging to Hendry Charles which he failed to account satisfactorily on how he obtained the money on Nov 19, 2020 in his bank account.

The offence under Section 22A (1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance provides for a fine of up to RM100 or up to three months jail or both, on conviction.

During mitigation, Chan asked for lenient sentence.

In another case, a man was jailed 10 months for stealing a handphone.

Lukman Hamidie Arsbi admitted to stealing the handphone belonged to one Mohammad Saifullah Rusell, at 8.40am on Sept 26 this year at the Kedai Yun Chung Lighting Sdn Bhd, Damai Plaza, here.

The court ordered Lukman to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest on Oct 1 this year.

Prosecuting Officer, Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik appeared for the prosecution.

Meanwhile, an unemployed woman was charged with cheating a man of RM6,000 over a car sale.

Titie Sandra Solumin, 33, pleaded not guilty to cheating Stanley Yamud by inducing him to believe that she was selling a vehicle to be paid on  instalments, causing Stanley to hand over RM6,000 to her.

Titie allegedly committed the offence at 2.35pm in front of a hotel at KK Times Square.

She was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between one year and ten years, with whipping and liability of a fine, on conviction.

Magistrate Lovely set Jan 24 next year for pre-trial case management and released Titie on a bail of RM1,000 in two sureties.

Meanwhile, four Filipinos, who rioted at the Immigration Temporary Detention Centre in Manggatal, together with several fellow inmates, was sentenced to 13 months’ jail.

Muhammad Zainal, Mikram Suhud, Alan Abdul and Darai Bakuak, aged between 19 and 51 pleaded guilty to jointly committing the offence together with 20 other inmates at the said premises, Jalan Kokol Poring-Poring, Manggatal at 6.25am on Sept 10.

They were charged under Section 147 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the Criminal Procedure Code which carries a jail term of up to two years or fine or both, on conviction.

The other 16 foreigners had on Nov 11 and Nov 24 sentenced to 13 months jail each after pleading guilty to the charge.

Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, prosecuting, applied for an adequate sentence.

The court ordered the four be referred to the Immigration Department after serving the sentence.
