Inter Milan legend Beppe Bergomi says coach Simone Inzaghi was desperate not to lose Romelu Lukaku this summer.
Inter sold the striker to Chelsea for £98m in August.
“Inter are playing well regardless of who goes on the pitch, I've never had doubts about Simone Inzaghi," Bergomi told Sky Italia.
“However, I have doubts about Romelu Lukaku [sale], because I thought he was an essential player for Inter.
“I spoke to Inzaghi, he told me that he had tried everything to convince him to stay, but then he understood that it was impossible.
“Inzaghi knew Lukaku's potential, he knew he was a key player in Serie A.
“However, Inter signed Edin Dzeko, while Hakan Calhanoglu has made a step forward in terms of mentality over the last month.
“Inter had to change their playing style, but they play well and attack with many men."
