West Ham hero Tony Cottee says manager David Moyes needs to be active in the January market.

Still alive in the Europa League, the Hammers need to add more depth to their squad, insists Cottee.

“What David Moyes has done is he's created a fantastic team spirit at West Ham and he won't want to change that," Cottee told talkSPORT.

“Yes I think he will go into the market, I'd like to see someone like Jesse Lingard for example – who was fabulous last year – get him back at the club and look at other options as well.

“They will need to buy a centre-half because they're really struggling with [Angelo] Ogbonna out and [Kurt] Zouma out for long spells so they've got to go into the market, but he will buy sensibly."

One of West Ham's most impressive feats this season has been reaching the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, beating both Manchester sides along the way.

You have to go back as far as 2015 for the last time the competition wasn't won by United or City, but West Ham took down both of them.

Cottee, though, is worried about the Hammers chances of progressing past rivals Tottenham to reach the final four, especially without added firepower upfront.

“They just don't have a striker at the club," he explained.

“If they beat Tottenham in the quarter-final then they've got two semi-finals, the FA Cup, plus the Europa League, plus the Premier League.

“So for West Ham to be fighting on four fronts they need to add to the squad in terms of centre forwards."
