IPOH – Financial woes, personal problems, alcohol intoxication, and divorce are among the factors contributing to domestic violence in Perak, the Perak state assembly sitting was told today.
State Women Development, Family and Community Welfare Committee chairman Datuk Wan Norashikin Wan Noordin said according to police statistics, 551 domestic violence cases were recorded between March last year and October this year.
She said during the same period, 133 domestic violence cases were recorded by the State Welfare Department.
“Three districts that recorded the highest number of domestic violence cases from last year to November 2021 are Kinta with 39 cases; Larut, Matang and Selama at 22 cases; and Manjung with 21 cases,” she said.
Wan Norashikin (Kg Gajah-BN) said this in reply to a question from Salbiah Mohamad (Temenggor-BN) on the statistics of domestic violence cases in Perak.
Meanwhile, she said a total of 311 sexual crime cases involving offences such as rape, sexual offences against children, obscenity, and sodomy were also recorded by state police during the same period.
Wan Norashikin said several measures have been taken by the state government through the Welfare Department to help domestic violence victims, including providing counselling services, shelter and protection to them. – Bernama, December 13, 2021
