Be careful of diseases caused by contaminated floodwater – MMA

FLOOD victims and even those involved in flood relief efforts in affected areas will need to observe proper hygiene and the SOPs as much as they can as they can be easily exposed not only to the risk of Covid-19 but other pathogens from the floodwaters. In situations where it will be difficult to social distance, facemasks should at least be worn and hands sanitised.

Cleaning with soap and clean water as soon as possible is also important in preventing any skin diseases or infections. Exposure to contaminated floodwater can cause skin irritation, gastrointestinal issues, cholera, tetanus and in some cases leptospirosis which can be fatal.

Better coordination needed on the ground

Aside from this, it is hoped that there will be improved coordination on the ground as we had experienced some difficulty identifying the official channel for aid in affected areas as there are many parties involved.

MMA had sent food supplies, mineral water, hand sanitisers and facemasks to flood relief centres in Section 21 and 22 in Sri Muda, Bandar Baru Klang, Taman Melawis, Pulau Indah, Teluk Gong, Klang Utama and Bukit Raja in Klang as well as an Orang Asli settlement and estate community in Pulau Carey which was also severely affected by the floods. Medicines are also being arranged to be sent tomorrow.

MMA is also concerned about the number of medical clinics that have been inundated by the floods and is looking into ways to assist them.

Our team is now working towards getting more much needed items including basic medication to flood victims in other affected areas. Those who would like to contribute towards these items can make a donation to MMA’s Disaster Relief Fund at: Malaysian Medical Association (United Overseas Bank) account no. 257 303 2332 Transaction details: MMADRF.

For further enquiries and to obtain the receipt after making a donation, the public can call: 6018 277 8794 or email at: finance@mma.org.my – The Vibes, December 21, 2021
