PENAMPANG: A political aide to Penampang Member of Parliament Darell Leiking rebutted the assertion by Secretary-General of Sabah Natural Justice 4 Sabahan, Dr Edwin Bosi, that Darell did nothing about the perennial flooding in the district.
Christopher Masudal said Edwin should have verified with the MP Office of Penampang or former Moyog Assemblywoman Jeniffer Lasimbang as to what Warisan representatives had done.
Christopher was commenting on a statement by Edwin that he brought up Penampang’s flooding issue in the State Legislative Assembly when he was former Kapayan Assemblyman and that then Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman announced millions of ringgit in funding to mitigate the flood.
Edwin also said Barisan Nasional (BN) lost to Warisan through party hopping and dashed the hopes of the people in Penampang and the new government failed to address the issue.
Christopher said the Moyog Flood Mitigation Project cannot proceed at the moment since it is facing delay due to objection by villages who reside at the place where the project is set to take place within the Petagas River.
“The latest development is that the State Government is still waiting for funds from the Federal Government to enable the project to continue.”
He said the suggestion by Edwin to widen and deepen Moyog River was already mooted by former Moyog assemblywoman Jeniffer Lasimbang.
“It is good that her idea is equally shared by Edwin,” he said, adding there’s also the problem of unregulated hill-cutting and clearing during the last decade, rampant land reclamation, unplanned housing and commercial development, etc.
“Hence an one-off dredging and deepening work of Moyog River might not be the permanent solution unless the State Government comes up with a proper blueprint on the flooding issue in the State,” he said.
