Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admits he needs to assess Matty Longstaff after his season-long loan with Aberdeen was cut short.

The midfielder left Pittodrie due to a lack of game time in the Scottish Premiership.

But with Longstaff back on Tyneside, Howe told Chronicle Live: “I need to make a decision based on what I see.

“He will come back into the training group.

“We haven't seen him yet but he will come back in the training group and I'll make my assessment then."

Longstaff was barely used last season by Steve Bruce despite signing a new contract.
