Cheras public flat units destroyed in frightful blaze

KUALA LUMPUR – Several households at low-cost housing units in the Sri Johor public flats, Cheras, have been destroyed in a fire this evening.

According to reports, the blaze had struck units at Block 31 of the flat complex.

Several video clips and images shared on social media showed the fire engulfing the upper floors of the six-storey building.

Bernama reported a Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department spokesman as saying that the fire broke out at approximately 9.20pm.

He said the fire is believed to have started from the middle of the block, before it spread to the entire floor.

“So far, firefighters are still investigating whether it involves any fatalities. The cause of the fire is believed to be from a gas leak,” he told reporters at the scene.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob visited the site and met with residents who lost their homes, assuring temporary shelter and RM1,000 aid for every household.

No injuries or deaths had been determined as at press time. – The Vibes, December 19, 2021
