Kota Kinabalu: A 32-year-old man was jailed five years with one stroke of the cane for having a kerambit knife in the public without a permit.

Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim meted out the sentence to Mohd Zaifol Gahri Julhari who pleaded guilty to the charge against him on Thursday.

Mohd Zaifol was found having the weapon at 6.30pm on May 29 this year in front of the Cimb bank in Api-Api Centre, here. The offence under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances Offensive Weapons Act 1958 carries a jail term of between five and 10 years,  and whipping, on conviction.

The court ordered Mohd Zaifol to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest on May 29 this year.

In mitigation, Mohd Zaifol who was not represented, asked for leniency saying that he needed to look after his ageing mother, and siblings. He promised the court that he would not repeat the offence.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Dacia Jane Romanus urged the court to impose a deterrent punishment as to give a lesson to Mohd Zaifol. She said Mohd Zaifol had carried a weapon in the public without authorisation.

Meanwhile, in another case, a man was jailed five years and ordered to get a stroke of the cane for taking drug repeatedly.

Lawrence Linjuran admitted to taking the drug on Apr 30 this year after his urine was tested positive for drug at the Tuaran police station.

He has two previous conviction records for taking the drug in 2018 and 2019.

After completing his jail sentence, the court ordered Lawrence to be placed under police supervision for two years.
