After a whirlwind of a year, the holidays are upon us again. I hope you have grown stronger and wiser as I have. Besides decorating your house and prepping for the season, here are some really good romantic films on Netflix you can tune into from the comfort of your own home. Go ahead, pick one and enjoy!

1. Love and Other Drugs

Trailer via 20th Century Studios Youtube

Year Released: 2010

Duration: 1h 52min

Starring: Anne Hathaway, Jake Gyllenhaal

This romantic dramedy tells the story of Jamie Randall, a gifted salesman who is a pro with the ladies. Randall got fired from his job at a home electronics store after sleeping with his manager’s girlfriend. So to save his ass from the misery of unemployment, his younger brother, Josh sets him up for an interview with pharmaceutical company Pfizer. Fast forward, Randall gets the job as a pharmaceutical salesperson at Pfizer.

While on the job, he gets acquainted with Maggie Murdoch, while she was on her usual visit to the doctor for her early onset of Parkinson’s. Attraction spark between the two and they get involved in a purely sexual relationship. And the rest is up to you to guess (or just go watch it)!

What I Like About the Show

I enjoyed the chemistry between the two characters. It’s that type of show where two people unexpectedly fall in love despite insisting on a no-strings-attached arrangement. However, a word of caution, the show is full of uncensored nudity and sexual scenes, so it’s best to avoid it if it’s not your cup of tea. Though predictable, the ending was very heartfelt and touching. Overall, a really good show!

2. Love Hard

Trailer via Netflix Youtube

Year released: 2021

Duration: 1h 46min

Starring: Nina Dobrev, Jimmy O. Yang, Darren Barnett

This show is basically about how a writer named Natalie from LA got catfished. She met Tag through a dating app and after chatting with him for a while, she grew to like him. I mean what’s not to like, he is dashing (according to her standards), attentive and fun to talk to. So since it was nearing Christmas, she decides to travel 3,000 miles to his home in New York to surprise him. But as fate would have it, he was a fake. He did not resemble the person he claimed to be in his profile. Though she was devastated, the two make a deal and this is when the story starts to get interesting.

What I Like About the Show

It’s really funny! Nina Dobrev, who plays Natalie, and Jimmy O. Yang, who plays the guy who catfished her, make a really good team. I especially enjoyed their duet of the holiday classic “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”. Though the show has drawn some controversy, I feel it teaches some important lessons about love and catfishing. Overall, the movie was fun and light-hearted, perfect to enjoy on the couch on a festive Christmas night.

3. Five Feet Apart

Trailer via Movieclips Trailers Youtube

Year released: 2019

Duration: 1h 56min

Starring: Haley Lu Richardson, Cole Sprouse

What if you love someone but you’re not allowed to touch them? Such was the fate of Stella and Will from “Five Feet Apart”. Both have cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic lung disease. Due to their vulnerability to cross-infection, CF patients have to stay at least 6 feet apart from each other or they could die. Despite knowing this, Stella and Will fall in love and they decide to take the risk by going on a date within the hospital walls. But instead of staying 6 feet apart from one another, they decide to get closer by one foot using a five-foot pool cue to measure their distance.

What I Like About this Show

The show is very heartfelt and touching. I like the beginning and the ending of the show, where the narrator, Stella, talks about the ‘human touch’ and how we shouldn’t take it for granted. Her words hit deep especially when it came to the end of the show. Another thing I loved about the show is its theme song by Andy Grammar called “Don’t Give Up On Me”. It’s very encouraging with meaningful lyrics. I recommend both the song and the movie.
