The Selangor Islamic Council (MAIS) has reverted the rights of politicians and political activists to teach Islam in Selangor, effective 31 December this year, which is just 3 days away.
This ban came after the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah commanded that no further tauliah (accreditation) will be granted to anyone who is politically active. His reason is simple – the Sultan refused for the religion to be politicised and became a matter of politics, especially in worshiping houses such as mosques and surau.
The Sultan refused the teachings of Islam by the politicians to go on in Selangor also due to the reasons of possible defamation, misunderstandings, as well as the split among the Muslim community that might happen if politicians take their accreditation for granted.
“This is also to avoid the image of the religion from being tarnished.”
Exceptions are given to the members of the State Government Meeting Council (MMKN) who hold the portfolio of Islamic teachers. They can continue to teach Islam in the state, under one condition – No politics allowed.
Should any politicians be caught teaching Islam without accreditation, they can be slapped with a fine of RM3,000 or a jail time of 2 years, or both.
Additionally, the Chairman of MAIS, Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof also said that any insults or refusal towards the Sultan’s command on this matter is also an offence under the Enactment of Syariah Crime (Selangor) 1995.
