TAWAU: A civil servant riding a high-powered bike died after being hit by a lorry at a junction of Ladang Sri Kunak, Jalan Tawau Lama, at 11.15am, Friday.
District Police Chief ACP Peter Umbuas said the victim was identified as Jol Kankok, 48, while the lorry driver is a 23-year-old Indonesian who did not sustain any injuries in the incident.
According to him, the lorry driver was heading to a junction entering a Mile 2 factory from the opposite direction, while the victim from Kunak could not dodge due to the distance being too close.
“The victim hit the tank section of the lorry, resulting in him succumbing to serious injuries and was reported to have died at the scene,” he said.
Peter said the lorry had a dent in the diesel tank, while the victim’s motorcycle was damaged in the front.
He said initial investigation found that the accident was caused by the negligence of the lorry driver when entering and exiting the intersection and he was arrested to assist in the investigation.
The case is classified under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
