KUALA LUMPUR – Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin revealed that 12 of the 17 unvaccinated individuals positive for the Omicron variant are umrah returnees, amid criticism over his decision to temporarily halt travel for the pilgrimage January 8 onwards.
He added that this is a violation of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) laid out earlier.
In a press conference today, he said: “The single largest source of imported cases – Omicron or otherwise – is Saudi Arabia.
“If we do not act based on the available data, we will not be able to curb the incoming wave of Omicron.”
The ministry predicted that the caseload could jump to 15,000 if action such as the temporary umrah travel ban is not implemented. – The Vibes, January 6, 2022
