
Kota Kinabalu: The increasing number of close contact cases and sporadic infections in Sabah is a sign that the virus is becoming widespread, said Sabah’s Covid-19 Spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.
He said Sabah identified 161 close contacts and 132 sporadic infections on Sunday.
“These are signs that transmissions have started to spread within the community,” he said, Sunday.
After a significant dip on Saturday, Sabah’s caseload soared to 373 the next day.
“Short-lived relief. After a fall of 91 cases on Saturday, number of new cases soared on Sunday, 106 cases more than Saturday’s 267.
“Five districts recorded a significantly high number of cases, namely Kota Kinabalu (65), Tawau (54), Penampang (45), Sandakan (45) and Tuaran (36).
“There are no new clusters, however five out of 17 active clusters in Sabah recorded 65 cases. The Jalan Sri Balung Cluster in Tawau contributed the highest number with 41 cases, whereas the Montenior Cluster in Kuala Penyu contributed 11 cases,” he said.
He added that no new clusters and Covid-19 deaths were recorded on Sunday.
Of the caseload, Masidi said 253 were fully vaccinated while 46 had gotten their booster dose, while 49 were ineligible for the vaccine and 25 were unvaccinated although eligible.
Masidi said 365 out of 373 cases were category one and two infections that do not require hospital treatment, while there are five cases in category three, two in category four and one in category five.
Some 214 Covid-19 patients have been discharged from the hospital while 791 patients are currently receiving treatment at hospitals, low risk quarantine and treatment centres (PKRCs), prisons/temporary detention centres and private facilities.
On Sabah’s immunisation programme, Masidi said 7,021 individuals were vaccinated on Jan 29, of which 6,971 were adults and 50 were teenagers.
He said as of Jan 29, a total of 2,409,968 individuals have completed both doses, of which 76.03 per cent were adults, while 2,454,173 have gotten their first dose, of which 76.74 per cent were adults.
Masidi added that a total of 337,269 teenagers have received their first dose, while 312,857 have completed both doses, which is 72.09 per cent of the teenage population.
