
Kota Kinabalu: A 21-year-old man was on Thursday fined RM3,500 or one year’s jail by the Magistrate’s Court for assisting in unlicensed money lending activity.
Syaharipudin Suparlan pleaded guilty before Senior Assistant Registrar Abdurrahman Abrar Jarni, who sat as magistrate, to distribute money lending brochures to help the business of unlicensed money lenders at 11.30am on July 7, 2021 in front of the Restoran Nasi Kukus D’ Garden, Royal Plaza Putatan.
The charge under Section 29AA(1) of the Moneylenders Act 1951 carries a jail term of up to two years or fine of up to RM20,000 or both, on conviction.
Inspector Navind Kumar Vijayan prosecuting, told the court that Syaharipudin was arrested by police after he was seen putting leaflets on the door of cars parked at the area.
Meanwhile, an 18-year-old, who admitted to a similar offence, will have his case rementioned on Jan 26.
The court set the date for him pending the availability of his social report.
He was also charged with distributing money lending brochures to help the business of unlicensed money lenders at the same place and time.
He was offered bail at RM1,500 in two sureties while waiting for the mention date.
In another case, two men were fined RM1,000 or two months jail each for having gambling paraphernalia.
Siruan Hatta, 29, admitted to having two pieces of Wahui gambling tickets, a mobile printer, a handphone and RM70 in cash at 3.15pm on Sept 18, 2021 at the commercial centre, Jalan Pusat Dagangan Putatan.
Emy Hairum, 30, pleaded guilty to having four pieces of Wahui gambling tickets and one illegal lottery ticket, a mobile printer, a handphone and RM9 in cash at the same place.
Siruan and Emy, who were brought before SAR Tiong Wen Wen, were charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953 which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or a jail term of up to six months or both, on conviction.
