Sitting under the stars and exchanging stories while snuggling around a crackling fire is a long-standing camping custom. Even though it’s getting a little chilly now that October has arrived, there’s never been a finer time to go camping in the great outdoors. We’ve compiled a collection of our favourite spooky stories to tell under the cover of darkness at your next campout to keep the spirit of the season alive. Choose your favourite, gather some tasty campfire fare, and prepare to scare the living daylights out of anyone who dares to listen to the following terrifying tales.

A young couple was travelling along a scenic, wooded stretch of highway. As heavy rain began to impede their eyesight through the glass, the sky darkened, lightning flashed, and thunder roared.

Susan advised them to pull over to the side of the road to wait out the storm, fearing for their safety. Ned agreed with a nod of his head and shifted his weight from the gas pedal to the brake pedal. Maybe it was the adrenaline rush, or maybe Ned was just a bad driver. Whatever it was, Ned slammed on the brakes too hard for the rainy weather. The car did not come to a halt and instead began to skid towards the pavement’s edge. The couple skidded to a halt at the bottom of a gully after flying off the road, bouncing over a few medium-sized pebbles and ploughing through many bushes.

After double-checking that Susan was okay, Ned exited the vehicle to assess the extent of the damage. Susan followed his indistinct figure as he stepped in front of the automobile in the light of the headlight. After a few moments, a dripping wet Ned jumped into the automobile next to her and informed her that the vehicle was stuck in the mud, even though it wasn’t seriously damaged. He’d have to seek assistance.

Susan gulped anxiously, thinking she wouldn’t be rescued right away. Until he returned, Ned instructed her to switch off the headlights and lock the doors. She must not leave under any circumstances.

When he told her to secure the car and not come out, he didn’t have to mention the name out loud; they both knew exactly what was on his mind.

At a jealous frenzy over her alleged affair, a man hacked his wife to death with an axe in Axe Murder Hollow. The husband’s axe-wielding apparition was reported to haunt the portion of the road even after his death.

Susan heard a cry followed by a loud thump and a peculiar gurgling noise just a few moments after Ned left. However, it was too dark outside for her to see anything. She retreated in her seat, terrified of the noises, and sat in total quiet. The silence was shortly broken by a different sound. Bump. Bump, bump, bump. There was silence, like if something was being blown about by the wind.

Susan was blinded when a bright light shone through the automobile windows. She was ecstatic when she heard an official-sounding voice urge her to get out of the car, and she was relieved that Ned had found a police officer to assist them. She stepped out into the storm after unlocking the door. She noticed it when her eyes acclimated to the bright light.

Ned’s body was dangling from a tree close to the automobile by his feet. He had been nearly decapitated due to a deep cut in his throat. She heard it again as his body swung back and forth in the wind. Bump, Bump, Bump, Bump, Bump, Bump, Bump, Bump, Bump.

She shouted in panic and dashed toward the light, but as she got closer, she realized the light wasn’t from a flashlight. The bright form of a man with a twisted smile on his face and a massive, gleaming axe in his hands stood there. Susan collapsed on the ground, attempting to back away from the towering figure as he approached.

“You’ve been very naughty, playing around when my back was turned,” the ghost sneered, running a finger along the sharp blade of his axe.

In the strange, incandescent light, the last thing she noticed was the gleam of the axe blade sweeping towards her.
