North Kalimantan quake brings tremors in Ba’kelalan’s highland villages

MIRI – Residents of highland villages in northern Sarawak’s Ba’kelalan range were jolted by tremors early this morning following an earthquake in neighbouring Kalimantan.

Awangku Mohd Hazmin, the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department chief for the Limbang division, said the fire station in Limbang had received alerts about the matter at around 8am.

“The villagers in Ba’kelalan said they felt the ground shaking this morning.

“We have sent units to the various villages in the Ba’kelalan highlands to carry out ground checks,” he said in a department update.

Progressive Democratic Party chief for Ba’kelalan, Datuk Nelson Balang Rining, said he is getting feedback from the locals.

“So far there have been no alerts of any damages to homes or their lands,” he told The Vibes.

Ba’kelalan is a short distance from a mountainous section of the Sarawak-Kalimantan border.

It is said that the northern region of Kalimantan, on the other side of the border, experienced an earthquake at around 5am.

“What I know so far is that the weather in the Ba’kelalan highlands and the border mountains has been bad the past few weeks.

“If the tremors could be felt in the Ba’kelalan area today then the earthquake must be quite near on the Kalimantan side,” Rining said. – January 27, 2022
