Floods, hillslope erosion hit parts of Sarawak

MIRI – Heavy downpour throughout parts of Sarawak for the past 24 hours has resulted in flash floods and hillslope erosion.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department today, parts of Limbang district were hit by flash floods due to heavy rain since last night and early today.

In view of the floods, the Limbang fire station deployed its personnel to numerous affected sites this morning.

Flood waters inundated roads at some low-lying villages along Jalan Batu Keliling and town areas plus several residential estates.

“Some of the roads are passable only for high vehicles.

“The situation is still considered as not serious given that evacuation was not needed as yet,” the department stated in its social media updates.

Meanwhile in the districts of Tebedu and Serian, fire and rescue personnel were also deployed following landslides at the trunk road from Kg Sejijag to Serian town.

Serian MP Datuk Richard Riot said there were 10 spots along the 3-km stretch where erosion of hillslopes had resulted in tonnes of mud collapsing onto the trunk road.

“The affected landslide stretch is located along the Tebedu-Serian road.

“The Public Works Department (PWD) had deployed its workers and tractors to clear up the debris.

“Diversions have been created to ease traffic flow.

“The PWD team will clear all the earth and debris as soon as they can,” he told reporters at the site. – The Vibes, January 11, 2022
