Kota Kinabalu: A 42-year-old Filipino was sentenced to five months’ jail for escaping from Kg Pondo, Pulau Gaya which was placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO), last year.
Unemployed Amikali Jilhani, admitted moving out from the area at 1.30am on July 6, 2021.
He was arrested by police at the Safma market.
The charge under Rule 6(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measure within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2021 is punishable under Rule 17(1) of the same Regulations which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or a jail term of up to six months or both, on conviction.
Amikali, who was not represented, requested a lenient sentence.
The court ordered Amikali to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his sentence.
Meanwhile, a 25-year-old woman was fined RM1,000 or seven days jail for having illegal gambling paraphernalia.
Sitti Saada Radjmil admitted to having two pieces of lottery tickets without licence and RM260 in cash at 3pm on June 19, 2021 at the five-foot way of a shop at Jalan Merdeka in Kg Air.
The court heard from the prosecution that Sitti, who was spotted committing the offence, confessed to running the activity at the said area.
Sitti was charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act which carries a jail term of up to six months, or fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.
Unrepresented, Sitti requested leniency on the grounds that she lost her previous job and has parents and siblings under her care.
