Incoming high tide likely in 8 areas on peninsular west coast

KUALA LUMPUR – At least eight areas on the peninsula’s west coast have been warned of incoming high tide that is expected from January 2 to 5.

The high-risk areas include Kedah (Kuala Muda), Perak (Bagan Datoh), Selangor (Klang, Kuala Langat, Sabak Bernam and Kuala Selangor) and Johor (Batu Pahat and Pontian).

The Department of Irrigation and Drainage said in a statement that the phenomenon will be on a smaller scale than the high tide recorded in November.

However, there is a chance that the situation may escalate.

“Although the high tide phenomenon this time is on a smaller scale than November’s, the situation will worsen if accompanied by strong winds, big waves and heavy rains that occur simultaneously, which will trigger flash floods, sea overflows and coastal floods.”

In addition, the department advised those living in these areas and beach visitors to take necessary precautions, such as paying close attention to the weather conditions.

It said those at the beach should be careful when indulging in water activities, leisure, and recreation during the four days.

“The public must be on standby to move to a safer location if heavy rains and high tides were to occur simultaneously, and to abide by instructions set by relevant authorities.

“In the occasion of a downpour and high tides occurring concurrently, the public must be ready to relocate to a safer area and comply with the instructions of the designated authorities.”

In November, more than 20 areas in Terengganu were at risk of floods due to the high tide. – The Vibes, January 2, 2022
