Southampton are wrapping up a deal for Cheltenham Town's young defender Will Armitage.

The 16-year-old centre-back became the club's all-time youngest player when he made 90 minutes during an EFL Trophy clash with Exeter City this campaign.

The teenager turns 17 in March and is still a first year scholar within the academy, but he has spent much of this season around Michael Duff's first team squad, having impressed the manager during pre-season.

Gloucestershire Live report that Armitage will begin discussing terms with the Premier League outfit this week.

Due to his age, a transfer fee will be involved in the defender's move. Armitage is likely to go straight into Saints' under-18s or B team as he continues his development.
