
TOURISM in the East Coast is being boosted through the implementation of various development projects.
Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) Minister, Datuk Jafry Arifin, announced that the State Government has allocated RM1 million under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) to improve basic facilities in Tawau Hill Park, Tawau.
He visited the Batu Bersusun Balung Cocos – rocks caused by natural processes from a volcanic eruption – which has potential to be developed into a community-based tourism product.
KePKAS has also allocated RM250,000 for building the Dataran Tamu Sukau Kinabatangan which he said has the potential to be developed as a tourist attraction.
In Sandakan, the Minister visited Creative Lane where RM200,000 was spent to beautify old buildings in the district with the concept of “Bringing Memories Back”.
A mural painting project is currently in the process of implementation to further beautify the creative lane.
In Lahad Datu, KePKAS approved RM199,850 to upgrade the facilities at places of tourist attraction in the district.
He visited the Menara Kayangan and Sepagaya Lahad Datu Forest Reserve Waterfall.
Menara Kayangan was built on Mount Silam located 11 km from Lahad Datu town. The observation tower offers natural views of the Sapagaya Forest Reserve and Darvel Bay.
