SANDAKAN: The 26 families who had been evicted from the Batu 2 Setengah squatter colony are hoping that they will be given a house under the People’s Housing Programme (PPR) immediately.

The squatters received an eviction notice from the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) to vacate their respective dwelling structure within 14 days starting Jan 10.

The site had been approved by the Lands and Surveys Department for school development, namely SK Sungai Anib 2 and SK Tanjung Papat 2.

Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong appealed to the Chief Minister and State Local Government and Housing Ministry to help the squatters concerned.

“At least help them get approval for PPR or affordable housing applications,” he said.

He also suggested more affordable homes be built in the State to help the B40 and M40 groups to own a house.

Chong said building affordable housing, especially in Sandakan, was a necessity to overcome housing and squatter colonies.

Commenting on the development of the schools, Calvin considered it as good news to the community, especially students.
