Brentford assistant manager Brian Riemer admits he became emotional after Mads Roerslev hit the winner against Aston Villa.

Riemer says the fullback's emergence should be an inspiration to all young players.

He told Bold: "When he gets the success that he did against Villa, I sit with a tear in the corner of my eye and an overheated heart. I'm so proud he's succeeding. People have laughed at me, for what should Brentford do with a player who was thrown on the scrap heap."

The scrap heap was when Roerslev was on-loan at Vendsyssel from FC Copenhagen, failing to get off the bench.

"Mads was 'dead meat'. His career lay in ruins and no one would touch him. But I knew him very well from the time I was U19 coach at FC Copenhagen and knew what he possessed with his qualities, so I put my head on the block opposite Thomas Frank and Rasmus Ankersen and said 'We should pick him up, because he can help us'.

"It's crazy to think about an inspiring story for all young people. Adversity makes you strong, and if you have the will, it can take you far.

"I've spent countless hours with him. I have spent evenings watching videos with him, been to the gym with him, gone for long walks with him when he needed to talk. I have trained extra with him countless times and have always said 'We are going to do this, Mads'."
