SANDAKAN: The management of the Kim Fung Night Market here has been taken over by Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC) since April last year, according to Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong.

“The Kim Fung Night Market is no longer under my jurisdiction,” he said, adding the market, which first opened in 2010, is now completely run by SMC.

“Staff of the Sandakan Municipal Council are in charge of licence collection, cleaning and control, as well as everything else related to the market.

“I received news from the Sandakan Municipal Council through a reply letter that they have fully taken over the operations of the Kim Fung Night Market beginning April 1, 2021,” he said, adding the public should be informed so that they are not confused about the situation.

He made the comment after receiving multiple public complaints that the lanterns for the 2022 Chinese New Year celebration have not yet been installed.

He also got applications from the public to rent space at the weekly market, which was recently reopened.

Calvin encouraged the public to contact or deal directly with the Council to acquire permission to rent the space or to inquire about the Kim Fung Night Market.
