Terence Gomez asks MACC advisory board why he was left out of crucial meeting about Azam Baki

KUALA LUMPUR – Political economy professor Edmund Terence Gomez questions why the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (LPPR) did not include him at their meeting concerning Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

In a statement today, Gomez pointed out he was left out of the meeting which was supposedly held on November 24.

Furthermore, he said LPPR should explain why they refrained from insisting for an independent investigation into Azam’s share ownership.

According to Gomez, it was not enough for LPPR’s members to merely distance themselves from chairman Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang and called upon them to confirm if they indeed held a meeting on November 24.

Earlier today, six members from LPPR refuted a statement by Abu Azhar who claimed that the board was satisfied with Azam’s explanation regarding the use of his account to purchase shares.

The six board members comprising Tan Sri Ismail Omar, Datuk Seri Azman Ujang, Datuk Seri Akhbar Satar, Datuk Hamzah Kassim, Datuk David Chua Kok Tee and Prof Datuk Mohammad Agus Yusoff suggested that statements made by Abu Azhar to the press were merely his own opinion.

In fact, they said, the board proposed for the matter to be referred to an independent committee, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Corruption and MACC’s complaints panel.

Late last month, Gomez himself resigned from the board in protest due to inaction by LPPR. – The Vibes, January 8, 2021
