Kota Kinabalu: A former manager with a government-linked company (GLC) was arrested today for accepting bribes amounting to RM170,000 from a contractor.

The 51-year-old suspect had accepted bribes in the form of cash and house renovations that were done for free by the contractor in return for expediting payment claims filed by the latter on work done for the company.

The man was arrested when his statement was recorded at the state Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office here at 9.30am.

Sabah MACC director S Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and said the suspect was being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.

The man will be charged at the special corruption court here in due course, he said.

In a separate case, Sabah MACC detained two people, including a contractor, for submitting false financial statements in an attempt to secure a RM1.2 million government contract.

The suspects, a 41-year-old man and a woman aged 37, sent in falsified bank account statements in order for their company to be in the running to win a tender to supply and deliver food items to a district hospital for two years in 2017.

Karunanithy said the suspects were arrested when they came to record their statements over the matter at the Sabah MACC office here at 10am today.

“Both suspects were released under MACC bail after providing their statements,” he said, adding the case is being investigated under Section 471 of the Penal Code.

Karunanithy reminded contractors who secured government tenders that submitting false financial statements was a criminal offence.
