Kota Kinabalu: Jesselton Twin Towers is set to be officially recognised as Borneo’s highest building structure after today’s (Friday) topping up ceremony of its Tower B at Level 54.

With its completion, Sabah is host to the tallest residential building in Borneo, settling the rivalry between Sabah and Sarawak of having the tallest or highest building.

Despite Kota Kinabalu hosting the 1977 completed Sabah Foundation’s 32-storey 128-metre tall Tun Mustapha Tower, some Sarawak newspapers persisted in reporting that the highest building in Borneo was Sibu’s 126-metre tall Wisma Sanyan at 28 storeys.

It was only after 2018 that Sarawak media recognised that the 132-metre tall Sabah State Administrative Building at 33 storeys was the highest building in Borneo. (Renamed as Kinabalu Tower last year)

Then, in July 2019, Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated Bintulu’s “The Peak” at 34 storeys, and some Sarawak media reclaimed bragging rights of having the tallest building in Borneo (one floor more than Kinabalu Tower). (New Sarawak Tribune, July 23, 2019)

With the completion of the 56 storeys Jesselton Twin Towers, Sabah can reclaim the bragging rights for having Borneo’s tallest building structure.
