Kota Kinabalu: Parents are encouraged to get their children vaccinated against the potentially life-threatening Covid-19 infection.
According to Sabah’s Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, just 9,686 (2.35 per cent) of the 411,400 children eligible for vaccination have got the vaccine as of Sunday.
“This is a very low figure,” he said, “considering the significant risk of infection and the number of children under the age of 11 who get infected with Covid-19 every day.”
On Monday, a total of 272 new patients were hospitalised, all of them children aged five to 11 and should be vaccinated.
“Parents should take the initiative to ensure their children are vaccinated in order to give them the best possible protection against Covid-19,” Masidi said.
On Monday, Sabah reported 4,035 new positive Covid-19 cases, up by 144 from Sunday’s 3,891.
According to Masidi, the increase was anticipated, taking into consideration the high incidence of sporadic infections.
On Monday, the number of districts with three-figure cases also increased to 12.
Among the districts that recorded high cases were Kota Kinabalu with 910 cases, Sandakan (496), Tuaran (388), Tawau (328), Penampang (325), Papar (263), Putatan (200), Lahad Datu (189), Beaufort (134), Ranau (129), Keningau (106) and Kota Belud (106). New cases in Putatan rose 136 in a day.
There were 61.07 per cent of symptomatic cases originating from sporadic infections, or 2, 464 out of Monday’s caseload.
A total of 4,011 (99.41 per cent) of the 4,035 cases were classified as Category One or Two. In Category Three, there were seven cases, 14 cases in Category Four and three cases in Category Five.
