Norwich City midfielder Billy Gilmour admits Manchester City were tough to handle for Saturday night's 4-0 defeat at Carrow Road.

Gilmour admitted the goals Norwich conceded were frustrating.

“We kind of limited them in play, when they were not playing from set-pieces, so it is annoying and it is frustrating," said Gilmour.

“So, it is something we are going to look back on and assess ahead of Liverpool and make sure that doesn't happen again."

Norwich had managed to create a couple of opportunities in the first half, hitting the post through Grant Hanley and bringing a couple of saves out of Ederson. Trailing 1-0 at the break there was a chance for the Canaries to get back into the game in the second half, but the timing of Manchester City's second, on 49 minutes, was a killer blow.

“We went in at half-time and we spoke about what we need to do better and how we can hurt them," added Gilmour. “So, for them to come out and get at that (goal) straight away, is what killed us. From then on it was quite hard for us to get up to the game. They were playing it around into the spaces and that is when we found it tough.

“Of course, we are not happy. We want to pick up points and City are a top, top team.

“It was a tough night for us. You have seen how hard we worked. We went in at half-time thinking we have got a good chance to come back out and really go for it, but the second goal killed us."

Gilmour who has just returned from injury to the starting XI, added it was important not to get too downhearted about the result – especially with an important game against Liverpool on the horizon.

“We are all disappointed, of course we are," he said. “You have got to try and win and take points from every game no matter who they are, but at the same time this game is not going to define our season.

Manchester City are top of the league and we know how good they are. We need to make sure we get the points we need form the teams that are around us and then try and fight against these top teams and try and get something.

On his return from injury, he added: “It is good to be back out there helping the boys. I have missed it. Hopefully, I can have no more injuries and finish the season strong and fight until the end of the season to stay in the league."
