NIBONG TEBAL – The Seberang Prai Selatan district disaster management committee has allowed residents staying near the Pulau Burung landfill, which recently saw massive fire and toxic smoke pollution, to return to their homes today onwards.
However, the directive does not apply to the 38 families at Ladang Byram, as the area is located within a radius of less than 5km from the Pulau Burung landfill.
“For Ladang Byram, residents are still advised to not return home, and the Department of Environment will continue to monitor until the air quality reads normal.
“Residents around Seberang Prai Selatan are reminded to always be aware of their health,” the statement said.
Last month, the state government ordered about 400 residents from 90 families affected by the Pulau Burung landfill fire to evacuate after toxic smoke at the site caused air pollution.
Of that number, 38 families are from Ladang Byram, while 52 families are from Kg Kebun Baru.
A total of 44 people from 10 families have been living in temporary evacuation centres since January 16, while others have moved to their relatives’ houses. – The Vibes, February 7, 2022
