Barcelona blew €15m on Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez in 2019, it has been revealed.
In Barca president Joan Laporta's 'forensic' financial report on the activities of the previous board, a €15m payment to Atletico appeared.
RAC1 reports in 2019 Barça refused to pay a commission of €20m to agent Mino Raiola to sign Matthijs De Ligt and then the alternative was Giménez, for whom Atlético asked for €80m.
In parallel, Barça ended up paying Antoine Griezmann's clause of €120m and since they could not face the two operations, Barça advanced €15m to ensure the signing of Giménez in the future. Transfer rights were also added for other players in case the Uruguayan was injured.
But the Gimenez signing never happened due to the stadium lockouts in 2020.
