We were overjoyed when Nadal won his 21st Grand Slam title and we would be over the moon to see Najib slammed for 12, Zahid for 47 and other kleptocrats are in the slammer.

We watched an epic Australian Open final battle between Nadal and Medvedev in Melbourne at the end of last January. The game lasted more than five hours. For Nadal’s supporters, like us who were glued to the TV set, it was a victory of the sort because what we hoped so much for our tennis idol happened that night. To our surprise, he was able to get ahead of the other two contenders, Federer and Djokovic who were left behind with 20 slams each after that event.

We saw glimpses of Spaniards celebrating in Spain but this was nothing like when the country won the World Cup. There were no large crowds in big plazas but Nadal made headlines as the only man to date to have 21 Grand Slam titles.

I asked my fellow countrymen celebrating the victory, what would we do if Nadal was Malaysian?

Without hesitation, someone on my left replied, “Right away the state where he was born would announce a plan to award a datukship for him just like Nicol for being number one in women’s squash. Henceforth he would be known as Dato’ Raphael Nadal”.

Besides getting a Kia from the game promoter he would a sporty Malaysian Proton X50 made by Geeley, a piece of land to build a bungalow and later perhaps a Tan Sri.

We were so starved for a tennis hero we could call our own that evening, we were ready to adopt him and made him a Malaysian until someone at the table said “Forget it!”

But why not?

“Do you still remember when we recommended VJ Singh, the golfer be made a Malaysian? The guy who was a minister then jokingly said if VJ was a Malaysian he would not be a world golf champion”. He was right. VJ became world-famous as a professional golfer when he chose to reside in the US instead.

We landed on our seats once again after flying in the clouds of euphoria still dreaming of making Nadal one of our own, when someone said, “Wasn’t that the same guy who was slammed with 12 charges and made us famous and labelled as the Number One klepto nation in the world?”

Darn it, the guy remembered. We thought he had Alzheimer’s.

One senior citizen at the next table who was watching us toasting to the success of Nadal suddenly raised his glass and walked over towards us. He was a little tipsy when he reached our table. “Hey, fellas, let’s yam seng to Zahid for 47 slam dunks”.

“Yes, why not? Let’s do that! Let’s toast to that too!” Replied the guy with Alzheimer’s.

We were already happy with 21 grand slams from Nadal but we would be more delighted and even intoxicated with excitement once Najib and Zahid were slammed by the courts and be sold down the river.

Otherwise, what else could we look forward to, now that the Australian Open is over?
