GEORGE TOWN - The newlyweds and their father-in-law had to hold hands while clinging to the pillars under the Penang Bridge for more than two hours in a storm early this morning.

Mangsa, Mohd. Khuzairi Azhari, 23, and Siti Nur Fairus Abu Bakar, 23, along with his wife's father, Abu Bakar Dollah, 58, were also said to have had to go through the high tide that rose to the bridge pillar from ankle level to calf from 1am.

According to Mohd. Khuzairi, they did not expect that there would be a big tide and an unusually strong wind last night that blew away their fishing equipment and food supplies.

"We boarded a fishing boat from the jetty to the bottom of pillar 28 and at that time the weather and the sea were calm. We planned to spend the night there and return to land at 7 this morning.

"We started to feel different after realizing there was strong winds and the sea water started rising on the pillar's base at 1 am, before reaching calf level within two hours. This is the first incident ever experienced since fishing at the location."
