Former Manchester United goalkeeper coach Eric Steele can see the leadership qualities of David de Gea now coming through.

He's captained the club and is a more vocal presence on the field and in the media, where he has been willing to demand a raise in standards as he tries to help the club navigate a back way to the successes of the Ferguson years.

"I think that it comes with a confidence that he looks around the dressing room and sees it's a young dressing room, then he sees he's the longest-serving player here with Phil Jones and that comes with responsibility at Manchester United," Steele told the Manchester Evening News.

"He has been more vocal on the field, you see him organising when he needs to do, but he's happy to take on the interviews because his command of the language is good now.

"You have seen a change, he has to recognise he's a major part of that squad now having been there for 11 years, he has to take on that responsibility and I think he's more than happy to do it."
