Watford manager Roy Hodgson says the club must be ready for a "dogfight" to avoid relegation.

The Hornets are in the relegation zone at present, and Hodgson knows that results will have to pick up if they are to avoid the drop.

The 74-year-old has taken over from Claudio Ranieri, who was only in charge for 14 games.

Hodgson left Crystal Palace in the summer, and had appeared to retire, but is now back in the top flight.

Asked if he can keep Watford up, Hodgson said in a press conference: "It's more than possible. I wouldn't have accepted the challenge had I not believed we could help the club stay in the Premier League.

"The proof of the pudding is in the eating and it's important the players react well and they can produce the level of performances that are going to be necessary.

"This league, in terms of relegation, is a dogfight."
