Although former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s appeal was thrown out by the Court of Appeal, he is still the subject of many other cases.
Recently, it was announced that 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) has managed to obtain a High Court order to freeze Najib’s assets and limit him to only be able to withdraw a maximum of RM100,000 monthly.
Judicial Commissioner Atan Mustaffa Yussof Ahmad granted the relief yesterday (8 February) after allowing 1MDB and four of its entities’ application for an ex-parte Mareva injunction in relation to their claim of US$681 million (RM2.8 billion) against Najib.
A Mareva injunction is a Court order which effectively freezes the assets of a defendant from being released pending the outcome of a legal action before the Courts.
Netizens think that RM100,000 per month is way too much
Following the news, Malaysians took to social media to express their anger. Many stated that RM100,000 per month is way too much.
“RM100,000 is the sum that normal citizens earn per year. But for him its his monthly spend. Means he still has a lot of money. Only in Malaysia,” commented one user.
Some users responded sarcastically to the announcement. “I pity him, he can only withdraw RM100,000. Must be hard to live especially with KL’s high living costs.”
“What is he going to eat,” commented another user.
Some believe that he should be made to live like the rakyat
Meanwhile, plenty of users disagreed with the decision and stated that Najib should instead be made to live like the rakyat.
“Just allow him to only withdraw as much as a basic salary per month. See if he can survive or not,” said one user.
Another said, “Limit him to RM10,000 per month. See how he breathes as the rakyat do.”
