Two Myanmarese siblings are believed to have died after eating leftover food out of starvation in a rubbish bin in Kampung Baru Sungai Tepa, Bukit Malut, yesterday.
4-year-old Nizambudin and his younger brother, 2-year-old Ngei Jamaludin, were reported dead at about 5.40 PM, reports say. The father of the two children saw them in an almost lifeless state next to a rubbish bin before rushing them to their neighbor's house where they have been temporarily staying.
According to the Langkawi District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Shariman Ashari, the police received information about the incident at about 6.15 PM. "A few minutes after being brought home, the two children stopped breathing, which prompted the nearby villagers to contact the police," he added.
Shariman also added that the father of the two children works odd jobs repairing boat equipment and other simple jobs. Apart from that, it is understood that the family did not have a home and lived with a neighbor.
Poverty among immigrants in Malaysia is a topic that is rarely focused on, and it is regrettably unfortunate what these children endured. May they rest in peace.
