TAWAU: Instilling awareness on environmental cleanliness should begin with the young generation and carry through into adulthood, said Tawau MP Datuk Christina Liew, Saturday.
She stressed that children must be taught not to dump rubbish into the rivers or drains so that they will grow up as responsible citizens who love and care for their environment, when officiating at the Kg Rancangan Batu 22 gotong royong under the Clean and Healthy Community Programme in the Balung constituency.
The event with the theme ‘Clean Kampung, Healthy Community’ was initiated by the Tawau Parliamentary People’s Service Centre to clear the rubbish and dead vegetation in the village surroundings.
“I am pleased with the participation of the community where parents encouraged their children to take part. This is one way for them to understand the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment from a young age,” Liew told reporters.
Meanwhile, she approved an application from the village residents for a signboard for Kg Rancangan Batu 22.
Earlier, Liew, who was accompanied by the Tawau Parliamentary Chief Liaison Officer Fung Thin Yein, visited the Sin On Market in Sri Tanjung where she mingled with vendors and patrons at the Food Court.
