Penang’s unemployment rate reaches historic low

GEORGE TOWN – Penang has registered a historic low in its unemployment rate, despite the dampening of the economy and healthcare due to the adverse effects of Covid-19.

Deputy Chief Minister II P. Ramasamy said that the rate of between 3.5% and 3.9% from last year, were among the lowest in the state’s history.

“What Penang needs now is to find the right human capital talents and to fill up the existing semi-to-top-skilled jobs available here,” said the Prai assemblyman.

Earlier, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow revealed that Penang was among six states in the country which have low unemployment rates, of between 3.6% and 3.9%.

“In Penang, it is the jobs chasing the people and not the other way around.”

In manufacturing, Chow revealed that from January 2020 until March last year, a total of 15,596 jobs were created.

Despite the ill effects of Covid-19, Chow said that Penang is committed towards accelerating its progress to achieve its Vision Penang2030 goals, where the state would become prominent as a smart city with strong family and green values.

In conjunction with its 14th anniversary of rule in Penang tomorrow, Chow said that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition will unveil its achievements in the state for the past four years, based on the PH electoral manifesto in the 2018 general election.

It will be made public in a ceremony on May 9 this year to mark four years of PH rule, while also to celebrate the past 14 years of governance in Penang.

Chow said that the manifesto is believed to contain 68 points, which PH has pledged to address.

“Even though it should be five years, PH will reveal ours now (under five years). Our achievements in the past four years would be disclosed. We have nothing to hide.”
