Leeds great Johnny Giles insists Marcelo Bielsa turned down January signings before last week's dismissal.

Despite his squad being injury-stricken, Bielsa made no winter additons. The decision later was questioned by some as player knocks continued to mount up.

Now, Giles - who played more than 380 games for Leeds, winning the 1972 FA Cup and two First Division titles - has stated that the club were in the market for players despite the lack of arrivals.

Speaking to Off The Ball, the 81-year-old said: “I heard that Bielsa turned down players that they wanted to bring in.

“But the thing is, were they his players that he wanted? The Director of Football may have said 'I'm going to bring Joe Bloggs in', and he might not have wanted him."

He added: “The fact is that they got nobody to replace those players at the time. If Liverpool had three players missing, they have cover, but Leeds don't have any cover."
