Kota Kinabalu: A 65-year-old man who disposed of several jewellery belonging to his sister-in-law, by selling it to a pawn shop, was jailed a year.

Abdullah Yong Abdullah pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to the charge against him on Friday.

He had disposed the jewellery, namely, three gold bracelets, two gold necklaces and a gold ring, by selling them to a pawnshop in Jalan Merdeka, Kg Air, here at 11am on Feb 27 this year.

The offence, under Section 414 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine, or both, on conviction.

Abdullah was ordered to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest.

The court heard that the complainant, who was Abdullah’s sister-in-law, lodged a police report on March 9 this year claiming that her jewellery were missing and believed to be stolen by Abdullah.

Based on the information, Abdullah was arrested the following day and the police also seized two pieces of gold pawn receipts.

The police then went to the pawnshop and seized the jewellery which had been pawned at the shop.

Investigation revealed that Abdullah confessed that he had pawned the jewellery belonging to his sister-in-law and used the money for gambling and drinking.

The owner and worker of the pawn shop who were later detained said they were not aware that the jewellery items were stolen.

Inspector Suzie Kupit prosecuted.
