Southampton defender Jan Bednarek described their 4-0 defeat at Aston Villa as a good wake-up call, as Saints saw a fine run of form come to an end in the Midlands.

Ralph Hasenhüttl's side had come into the game on the back of three consecutive victories and seven games unbeaten, but they were brushed aside by a brilliant performance from the hosts, who dominated throughout the afternoon.

"I think it was a good wake-up call today, that we always have to work hard, we always have to be committed and we always have to be aggressive," he said. "I think that's what will make us stronger, that's today what will be the lesson for us and then hopefully the next game we can show the real team we are."

On where they underperformed, Bednarek said: "I think we didn't bring to the game what makes us strong – aggressiveness, commitment and a willingness to perform well. I think that's what we were missing today, and that's what the result is.

"Hopefully it was one game, and I think it's better to lose one game 4-0 than four games 1-0, so that's the thing. We know what didn't work well today. I would say every part of the game was missing a little bit today, so we have to keep on going.

"We know our value and we know that one bad game doesn't make us a bad team. That's the main thing we have to think of, and hopefully we can make a better game on Thursday against Newcastle.

"It was only one game, we lost three points, and that's it. That's the past, and we can only affect what's now and in the future, so that's what we focus on."
