While a jury in a courthouse in New York was busy listening to arguments over a case involving a manager of Goldman Sachs, Roger Ng who was the only one from the bank to be charged for the 1MDB scandals, a company started its production of a documentary about his business associate, Jho Low in London.

They have appropriately named the film about the alleged mastermind of the 1MDB financial scam, “Man On The Run” who is nowhere to be found to bring him to justice in New York or Kuala Lumpur, the scene of his crimes.

However, the film would probably bring Jho Low “back to life” through other means to revisit the scenes where he committed his crimes starting with London, followed by Washington D.C., New York City, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Singapore and Los Angeles.

According to Deadline, the shooting schedule would be in line with a plan to trace the life of Jho Low who was born in Penang, educated at Harrow in London and the Wharton School of Business in the U.S.

Indeed he was one of the few who had successfully put Malaysia on the world map but for the wrong reasons. This is not likely to be a sequel to Crazy Rich Asians by any means. It’s just about the life of an infamous “crazy” Malaysian born in Penang who had embarrassingly raised Malaysia to be a world centre of kleptocracy.

Before he disappeared into the wilderness, Jho Low, reportedly led a glamorous and flamboyant life.

He paid most likely with money stolen from 1MDB just to party with celebrities like actor DiCaprio or to date Miranda Kerr, a supermodel. Or even to partly finance The Wolf of Wall Street with his partner Riza, stepson of Najib who has since been sentenced for stealing money from 1MDB. That drew applause from a stepfather who then urged other Malaysians to emulate his stepson to enter the film industry.

Jho Low is a man on the run and is believed to be hiding somewhere in China trying to escape phenomenal charges of money laundering and a string of other offences as the alleged mastermind of the 1MDB related financial scam. He is indeed a man who has nowhere to run with Interpol on his back, except hide in China.

According to Deadline, Cassius Michael Kim will direct Man on the Run and is produced under his banner, The Smoking Section, in association with Evergreen Media’s Scott Norville.

Kim was quoted by Deadline as saying that through this film, he planned to “examine the full scope of impact for one of the largest known financial scandals in history”.

To do that he would have to resort to interviews with “previously unheard sources and original reporting”. You and I ought to devote some time to watch the film just to satisfy our curiosity to discover who the previously unheard sources would be.

Kim hoped his film would be the definitive accounting of this saga as well as “an indictment of the global capitalist system and its inability to regulate itself in the face of avarice and corruption.”

Jho Low educated at Harrow and Wharton grew to become part of that global capitalist system. It is the system’s inability to regulate itself in the face of avarice and corruption that resulted in Jho Low finding a way to manipulate it to his own advantage.

He ran off before that same system had time to catch up with him and he is still running. But he fortunately or unfortunately is living within a communist system.

However, as a final note, Malaysians should not and must not be proud of Jho Low or any film that in any way glorifies him.
