Portugal midfielder Joao Moutinho admits his side were thinking they would take on Italy in their World Cup Qualifier this week.
The European heavyweights overcame Turkey on Thursday, and set up a clash against North Macedonia on Tuesday.
The latter completed a remarkable 1-0 win in Italy to secure their place in the play-off decider.
"Won't lie to you: we were all expecting it was going to be Italy," Moutinho told a news conference.
"Football is different nowadays, every team can win at this level, doesn't matter the names, numbers or stats.
"North Macedonia have an extraordinary core and will do their best to make our life miserable on Tuesday."
